— Wave Wash Wake
2024 No End Gallery Johannesburg
Wake
1— to emerge or cause to emerge from sleep.
2— a trail of disturbed water or air left by the passage of a ship or aircraft.
3— a vigil held beside the body of someone who has died, accompanied by ritual observances.
A wave climbs a ladder to wave a flag, to the fallen and the risen.
Backwash / Washback
1— the motion of receding waves
2— the unpleasant after-effects of an event
3— the liquid that flows back after someone has taken a drink, assumed to contain saliva
Layers of wax disturbed by running water over a surface. The wax resists the water’s flow, the water weathers the wax. A trace of physical forces at play, the natural cycles of growth and decay. The aftertaste of the aftermath.
